On International Day of the Midwife, we honour the incredible midwives who walk with families through both the happiest moments and the most heartbreaking times of their lives.
Families often tell us how midwives were the first to offer compassion, calm guidance and unwavering support. Many go far beyond what is expected – staying past their shifts to ensure families have the best possible care, helping create precious memories in the shortest of times, memories that will and need to last a lifetime, as well as holding parents during unimaginable grief.
This year’s theme, “One Million More Midwives,” highlights the global need to increase the midwifery workforce. It reminded us of the midwives who are, to bereaved parents, truly one in a million – those who make the darkest moments gentler, more bearable, and filled with love.
Midwives are often at the front line of care for parents who find themselves in shock and numb from a devastating grief. They help families connect with their babies, create treasured memories, and feel supported from the very first moment.
The midwives we work collaboratively with are amazing individuals, filled with so much compassion and a drive to ensure they are getting the care right for each bereaved family from the very start. We remain committed to strengthening these partnerships across each of the health boards we offer support to. We do this through having open and honest conversations, feeding back parent experiences and providing our Compassionate Care Bereavement Training. Together, we can ensure families receive the sensitive, compassionate support they deserve.
