30 Years of Providing Baby Loss Counselling and Support

2026 marks Held In Our Hearts 30th anniversary as a registered Scottish charity. Our vision has always been clear: a Scotland where every bereaved family can access compassionate, specialist support, wherever they live. From early-intervention, Hospital to Home support, to long term care in the community – our mission is to ensure no one in Scotland faces baby loss alone.

 

We’ve come along way from where we started, initially offering peer support and counselling to bereaved parents in just the Lothians, now supporting families the length and breadth of mainland Scotland. Thanks to the generosity of those who have supported us in the past 30 years, over the past 5 or so years we have expanded quicker than we could have hoped for – we successfully rolled out our innovative Hospital to Home early intervention support to a total of 5 Scottish Health Boards and we are closer than ever to achieving our mission. 

Whilst we are proud to have delivered compassionate care for three decades and begun to shape early-intervention support across Scotland, we also stand with the fact that too many families across Scotland are still unable to access the specialist bereavement support they need – and deserve.

Held In Our Hearts has been our lifeline since our daughter was stillborn at 29 weeks last year.
The support they provide to bereaved families is immeasurable. Our very first phone call made such a huge impact on us, as well as receiving amazing practical advice about funeral arrangements, our emotions were suddenly validated – it was ok and normal for us to be feeling not only devastation and heartache but also huge amounts of love and pride for our beautiful little girl. Held In Our Hearts is so special, their support is family and person-centred and entirely tailored to each family’s individual needs, not only when newly bereaved but throughout our lives. As bereaved parents themselves, they are in a unique position to understand and empathise with those of us who access their services and know all too well there is no “right and wrong” when it comes to grief. It’s horrible that such a charity has to exist but thank goodness that it does!
