Linzi & Maci’s Story -Driving Home From The Hospital

The Drive Home from Hospital Without Maci 🪽

There is one journey home that I will never forget.

It wasn’t the journey home I had imagined when I became a mum to Maci.

Maci spent her 19 precious days in NICU. For those 19 days, the hospital became our world. The monitors, the machines, the nurses, the constant beeping — everything became part of our normal.

I would go into hospital and see my beautiful baby girl.

I would hold her when I could.
I would talk to her.
I would hope.

Hope that one day I would be able to take my baby home.

But that day never came.

Maci passed away in hospital.

And eventually, there came the moment when I had to leave the hospital without her.

There was no baby to put into a car seat.

No little face to look at in the mirror.

No tiny cries from the back seat.

No journey home with my daughter.

Just me, leaving the place where my baby had spent all 19 days of her life, knowing I was going home and she wasn’t coming with me.

I don’t think anyone can prepare you for that kind of emptiness.

The world outside the hospital was still moving. Cars were driving past. People were going about their normal lives. Somewhere, parents were taking their babies home, completely unaware of the heartbreak sitting inside another car.

But my world had stopped.

I wasn’t just leaving a hospital.

I was leaving behind the place where my daughter had lived, been loved and fought so hard.

And I was going home without her.

The hardest part was knowing that this wasn’t just one journey without Maci.

It was the beginning of every journey without her.

I would never take her home.

Never watch her grow.

Never celebrate her first birthday.

Never see her first Christmas.

Never hear her first words or watch her take her first steps.

All the ordinary things I had once imagined suddenly became the things I would spend my life missing.

Maci only had 19 days in this world, but those 19 days made her my daughter forever.

She wasn’t just a baby who was in NICU.

She was Maci.

She was loved.

She was wanted.

She was our little girl.

And although I had to leave the hospital without her, I didn’t leave her behind.

I took her with me in my heart.

I still carry her every single day.

The years have passed, but there are moments when it feels like that journey home was yesterday.

I still think about the baby girl who should have come home with me.

I still wonder who she would have become.

And I still wish I could have had that ordinary journey home — the one where I could look in the back seat and see my beautiful daughter sleeping peacefully.

Instead, I had to make the journey home with empty arms and a heart full of grief.

But Maci will always be part of our family.

She will always have a place at our celebrations.

She will always be remembered on birthdays and Christmas.

She will always be spoken about.

Because although her life was heartbreakingly short, her impact was forever.

Maci, I couldn’t bring you home from hospital, but I carry you home with me every day.

You were here for 19 days.

I will love you for every day of my life.

My beautiful girl.

Forever my baby. 🪽💗
