50 Munro challenge in memory of Theo

On Saturday, 19th July, one of our amazing Highland mums, Ami, completed her 50 Munro challenge in memory of her beautiful boy, Theo. Ami, who started her challenge back in April, completed 50 Munros over 16 days, the fact that she completed 21 in just 5 days! Ami chose Ben Wyvis, a mountain close to home, to climb with family, friends, and colleagues on her final day

To mark this fantastic achievement Magi, our Highland Hospital to Home worker, who supported Ami through the very early weeks and months following her loss, was waiting at the finish with a cheery smile and a warm hug

Ami wasn’t new to Munro-bagging when she embarked on her epic challenge, having scaled 15 – 20 before, but she’s now bagged over 60 different ones and says she’ll continue to climb, but now she’ll always think about Theo when she does. Being away from reality, in the middle of the mountains, gives her important thinking time, time to process her thoughts and her grief.

One of Ami’s friends gifted her a wee heart with Theo’s name on it to bring with them to the summit, and Ami was also given a beautiful bear with Theo’s name on. Such thoughtful gifts on what will have been a very emotional day.

It was a special moment for Magi too, as all the families she has supported have a special place in her heart. Whilst the early intervention support offered by the Hospital to Home team is perhaps just 6 – 8 sessions, there is a lasting connection made during that time before parents are encouraged to move to more long-term peer support within the charity.

Magi said, “I think about the families I have worked with long after Hospital To Home visits have ended, so it was lovely to catch up with Ami and meet some of her family and friends. I am in awe of Ami’s strength and determination. This was a huge challenge that has given hope and inspiration to so many people. Well done Ami, family and friends. You are legends! xx”

We are often inspired by amazing parents like Ami. Taking on awesome challenges in memory of their little ones is one way of creating a meaningful legacy, which in turn can make a difference to future bereaved families in need of support

If you would like to take on your own challenge for us, no matter how big or small, please get in touch with the fundraising team or speak to your Hospital to Home or Peer Support Worker – we’d be happy to help. x
