Each year we welcome midwifery students who wish to complete an elective placement with us. This year Boglarka (Bee) joined us, and we wanted to share a little of her reflections of her time with the team.
“As a third-year student midwife, I have had very little experience providing bereavement care to families while on placement. Because of this, it was really important to me to learn more before qualifying. I remember Katy coming to university to deliver a session about Held in Our Hearts, and I was so inspired by her, her story, and all the incredible work she shared about the charity. From that moment, I knew I wanted to spend part of my elective placement with them.
When I walked into the office on my first day, I was welcomed with open arms. I had the opportunity to meet and speak with different members of the team about their individual roles within the charity. They made sure to provide me with such a wide range of opportunities over my two weeks, and I genuinely feel that I got the most I possibly could from the experience.
At first, I found listening to the stories of bereaved parents quite daunting because you naturally feel so helpless and often don’t know what to say. However, if there’s one thing I learned from the parents who so generously volunteered to speak with me, it’s that they are often simply grateful for the opportunity to talk about their babies and share their memories. It felt like such a privilege and an honour to be trusted with those stories. I have learned so much from them, and I hope to carry everything they taught me forward throughout the rest of my training and into my career as a soon-to-be qualified midwife.
It was an absolute honour to get to know the amazing women behind this incredible charity, to learn more about the work they do, and to gain a deeper understanding of the support they provide to bereaved families. I honestly couldn’t fault my experience with Held in Our Hearts. It was such a valuable placement, and it was genuinely difficult to say goodbye on my last day. They have had such a positive impact on me, and I hope to continue supporting the charity in some way during my free time if the opportunity arises.”
At the end of her placement Bee gifted us this beautiful piece of artwork which she created to include the symbols of our core values; empathy, connection and love.
